Science and Technology Projects on Display January 27

Sunday, January 27

Come see the work of students in the 6, 7 and 8th grades on Sunday, January 27. As we begin Catholic Schools Week, projects from Science classes will be on display after the 9:00 mass. Projects will be in the side hallway by the 7th grade homeroom.

The 6th grade students have completed individual science fair projects. The students worked hard designing experiments, writing papers, creating display boards and giving talks about their projects. Topics for the projects:
* exploring the evaporation of dry ice
* making a hotter pizza oven with different materials
* investigating heat loss of water in different size containers
* examining a dwarf hamster's movement through a maze to find seeds
* testing what age of yeast makes a higher loaf of bread
* analyzing rates of evaporation of salt, sugar and tap water
* comparing coffee grounds to another fertilizer for corn plant growth
* testing plant growth with water, milk and a soft drink
* determining what type of potato will power a potato clock the longest
* testing bridge strength in bridges built with different types of wood
* comparing the brightness of glow sticks in hot and cold environments
* testing plant growth when plants are given orange juice

7th Grade has been studying life science. The students have created a virus replication display and a large color-coded DNA model.

The SimCity projects are completed! 8th grade students will have a print of part of their computer-designed city posted next to the model that they built of the city. Models had to be constructed of 100% recycled materials. Each group also wrote an essay to explain their city design.

December news

SimCity project completes first phase!
The 8th grade student groups have finished the computer designs of their cities. The next step is to choose a small section of the city to build. The models will be constructed 100% from recycled materials. Students are now gathering supplies for the models. The models will be built and assembled during classes in January.

7th Grade Still Waits for Space Seeds
We are eagerly awaiting a shipment of basil seeds from NASA. The seeds have been returned to Earth from the International Space Station and are in the process of being packaged for individual schools. No time for the arrival of the seeds has been given, but we will fit them into the class schedule as soon as they arrive.

Science Fair project completion deadline approaches
The 6th grade students are in the process of finishing their Science Fair experiments. The deadline for a report on the results is December 18, 2007. When classes resume in January, the students will continue to work on their Science Fair papers, will design and decorate display boards, and will prepare speeches to present their projects.

Testing begins September 24

The 7th grade students will begin testing sessions for the ITBS (Iowa Test of Basic Skills)and the CogAT (Cognitive Abilities Test) on September 24, 2007. These are standardized tests taken in the 7th grade. On most days, we will have two short testing sessions. These will usually replace Science and Enrichment times, with most other classes continuing as usual. Testing will occur over 6-7 school days.

7th Grade Homeroom and Science News

I teach Science for grades 5, 6, 7 and 8, Pre-Algebra for 8th grade students, and Algebra for 8th grade students.

6th Grade Science Fair - Students will design and carry out individual science fair experiments. I am working on a complete schedule and will send details and deadlines when they is finalized.Class discussion about science fair will begin in September.

7th Grade NASA Lunar Plant Growth Project. NASA has designed a school project using
basil seeds that have spent the last year on the International Space Station being
exposed to the temperatures and conditions that exist in space. I have requested some of the seeds and envision the class working together on the NASA project.

8th Grade Future City Competition. In this design project, teams of students use
computers to plan a city at least 100 years in the future and then build a scale model of part of their design. Mr. Hall would be involved with this, helping with technology and providing guidance throughout the project.
